Pamela Anderson Opens Up About Being Romantically Linked to Julian Assange: ‘It Is Sexism’

Pamela Anderson is shedding more light on the nature of her relationship to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

The actress sat down for an interview with The Daily Beast where she opens up about Assange, the whistleblower who has been taking refuge in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for the past six years. Anderson has spoken in support of him several times and hinted at them being more than just friends, but seemed to shut down those rumors in the interview.

“It is sexism,” Anderson said of always being linked romantically to powerful men by tabloids. “It’s all crazy. It’s funny how your relationships do get reduced to some kind of sexual relationship. I think the world of Julian, I really do, and I think he’s an important person that needs to be protected, and that bringing any attention to him helps keep him safe.”

Anderson also gave more insight into their first meeting and how the two came to be friends. The actress says Assange heard about how she included him in one of her poems, and asked mutual friend Vivienne Westwood to introduce them. But when the two women got the dates mixed up, Anderson showed up to the Embassy on her own and met Assange one-on-one.

“I went to the embassy, buzzed the buzzer, said who I was, and we had this long conversation,” she explains. “There were a lot of people in the room and then slowly it was just him and I. Then I came a few months later and started bringing him vegan food and made sure he was exercising, because I was worried about his health—his skin was transparent. I learned a lot about him and we have a lot of mutual friends, so it’s nice to keep his spirits up.”

Although she maintains a friendship with Assange, Anderson has been dating French football player Adil Rami, who won the World Cup with his team on Sunday in Moscow. The actress has been seen supporting her boyfriend in Russia and attended his semifinal match against Belgium last week.

Pamela Anderson arrives at World Cup to support boyfriend

Pamela Anderson secretly arrived at the World Cup on Tuesday to watch her boyfriend, who is a member of the French national team take on Belgium in the semifinals, according to a person close to the actress.

The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity due to privacy concerns on the situation.

Anderson, 51, has been dating French defender Adil Rami since the pair met at the Monaco Grand Prix in May 2017.

Anderson landed in Russia wearing a diamond Cartier Panther ring, and the person hinted to USA TODAY Sports that Anderson and Rami will soon be announcing they are engaged to be married.

“I expect big things on the horizon from them,” the person said.

Anderson, the former “Baywatch” star who is part Russian, was keen to avoid taking focus away from the French team in its bid to add its second World Cup title. Instead of sitting with the other player wives and girlfriends she was ushered to a VIP lounge, where French President Emmanuel Macron and the Qatar royal family were also situated.

Anderson has become a soccer fan since her and Rami became serious, and was seen at his games for Marseille in France’s Ligue 1 last season.

While still acting, Anderson is also a passionate and outspoken advocate for animal rights and has campaigned extensively for an improvement in their treatment internationally.

Pamela Anderson Says ‘Vegan Food Is Not Enough’ in Fight Against Plastic Pollution

Actor and longtime animal rights activist Pamela Anderson took to Twitter over the weekend to urge her followers to stop using plastic after she received vegan takeout lunch in a plastic bag.

“We need to use what we have – and consume no more plastic,” she wrote. “The plastic take away container even if full of vegan food is still not good enough.”

In a comment following the initial post, Anderson said she had “already failed” in her own effort to stop using plastic, citing beauty products, toothbrush, shampoo, blow dryer, “it’s everywhere,” she said. “Î’ve only just started my day,” using the hashtag #beaware to call her followers attention to the issue.

Anderson joins a growing number of celebrities taking a stand against single-use plastic. In May, vegan musician Moby urged fellow celebrities including former President Barack Obama to give up plastic water bottles.

“Horrifying fact: we use one million plastic water bottles, every minute of every day and by 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish,” Moby explained. “And giving up plastic water bottles is really, really easy. You just replace it with a reusable water bottle.”

In June, for World Environment Day, celebrities including actors James Cromwell, William Shatner, and Barbara Hershey, model Gisele Bündchen, and conversationist and primatologist Dr. Jane Goodall, all pledged to give up single-use plastics.

Plastic pollution has become a significant threat to the world’s oceans and marine life. Films such as Chris Jordan’s recently released “Albatross” highlight the immense threat plastic poses to marine life, including seabirds like the albatross. Fish, birds, and other marine animals often consume plastic they mistake for food. Or, they eat other animals who consumed plastic.

An estimated 5 to 13 million metric tons of plastic enter the ocean every year, with most of it coming from communities within 30 miles of shorelines. Recent data suggested there may be more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2050.

Seattle just became the first major U.S. city to ban single-use plastic straws. McDonald’s says it’s replacing plastic straws at its restaurants starting in the UK, and a growing number of global campaigns aim to reduce plastic straw use. In the U.S. alone more than 500 million plastic straws are thrown away every day.
