Pamela Anderson has defended Julian Assange once again and insisted the rape allegations made against him in 2012 were a “setup” as she spoke out about sexual harassment in the entertainment industry.
Anderson, 50, faced backlash last month after she suggested Harvey Weinstein’s accusers should have known what they were getting into by going into a hotel room alone. She has addressed the ongoing sexual misconduct scandal once again, while discussing the allegations made against her friend Assange, who is currently held up inside the Ecuadorian embassy in London.
Appearing on BBC’s “Victoria Derbyshire programme” on Tuesday, the “Baywatch” alum explained of the WikiLeaks founder: “I would rather be a friend to Julian than anybody. I think he’s so full of information, has an incredible perspective and is a genius and is trying to help humanity.”
She added that it is “impossible” for Assange to leave the embassy after facing a rape allegation, which was dropped by Swedish authorities last year. Assange sought asylum in the embassy back in 2012 after losing court battles to avoid extradition to Sweden over the claims, which he denied all along.
Anderson insisted, “The best way to discredit somebody is to call them a rapist, or a pedophile. How do you get over that even if it’s not true? So I think this was a setup. This was not something that was true.”
Talking further about the #MeToo movement, Anderson insisted that young women “just have to be more careful.”
“Even in colleges I find young girls drinking and putting themselves in this situation, these boys have been away from home for the first time. They’re full of testosterone, especially with what people see on the internet these days. A woman in that position is in a dangerous position so you just have to be careful. We can ruin boys’ lives and women’s lives this way.”
However, the star denied that she was victim-blaming and said: “I’m a good person to discuss this because of my image. I’ve just learned to not put myself in positions where I could be in any danger.”
